The Return of the Prodigal Son – The Second Session

In December 2024, The Lost Recordings released the first volume of the legendary concert recorded on October 11, 1960, at the Olympia in Paris by Miles Davis and his quintet: Sonny Stitt on saxophone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on double bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Today, the label presents the eagerly awaited second part of this historic performance.

In 1960, Miles returned to Paris for the fourth time in 12 years. A few months earlier, he had played a turbulent concert with John Coltrane, marking the end of their collaboration. At the Olympia, he rediscovered a theater he had grown to love and a city that had adored him since his first appearance in 1949. Miles later said: “I really like being in Paris. I love the way I’ve been received every time.”

Over the 12 years from 1949 to 1960, Miles’s style evolved profoundly. From his enthusiastic adoption of Charlie Parker’s bebop to his collaborations with Gil Evans, he continuously refined his style, developing a broader jazz approach inspired by Ahmad Jamal and enriched with elements of classical music. The soundtrack for the film Elevator to the Gallows (1957) proved a turning point, foreshadowing the masterpiece Kind of Blue, released two years later.

From the very first notes of Stardust, a previously unreleased track, Miles set the tone with a seductive approach and subtle lyricism. Swing bursts triumphantly into the concert with a tune by Sonny Stitt, followed by the evocative ’Round About Midnight, then the lively Walkin’, where Stitt and Davis engage in fiery musical dialogue. If I Were a Bell and Fran Dance provide introspective moments, before the unstoppable energy of Two Bass Hit. The concert reaches its peak with So What and All of You, where Davis fully captivates the audience, culminating with the closing notes of The Theme.

The story of this release began in 2022 with a visit to a tape collector in Brittany, who owned the missing part of this extraordinary recording labeled “Miles Davis – Olympia 1960.” Nearly two years were spent tracking down the remaining original tapes in Stockholm. Thanks to The Lost Recordings, this legendary concert is finally released in its entirety for the first time.
