In 1960, Contemporary Records released two significant albums by Art Pepper—Gettin’ Together and Intensity—which further showcased the saxophonist’s remarkable creativity. Gettin’ Together opens with the famous “Bijou the Poodle,” composed by Pepper himself. Jazzwise praised it for its “angularity… reflecting the darker side of late-1950s idyllic California jazz.”

While often seen as a follow-up to Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, this album once again features Pepper alongside some of Miles Davis’s finest musicians, including the legendary bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. When reviewing Intensity in 1963, the San Francisco Examiner noted that Pepper was “on the right path toward a new expressive freedom,” while AllMusic highlighted his swinging approach to standards such as “I Can’t Believe That You’re in Love with Me,” “Gone With the Wind,” and “I Wished on the Moon”, making the album both artistically compelling and highly enjoyable.

This new edition of the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series has been remastered to state-of-the-art standards by Bernie Grundman from the original analog tapes, pressed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and presented in a luxurious gatefold tip-on cover by Stoughton Printing.
