The acclaimed Rio After Dark by Ana Caram

Extensive liner notes

Gatefold cover

Brazilian bossa nova and pop jazz singer Ana Caram, who also plays guitar and flute, was born on October 1, 1958, in São Paulo. Caram earned a degree in composition and orchestral conducting in São Paulo and moved to New York in the 1980s. She received her first major recognition when she performed with the legendary Paquito D’Rivera at the JVC Jazz Festival at Carnegie Hall in July 1988. This led to a recording contract with Chesky Records, and for her debut album, she collaborated with the Brazilian bossa nova master Antônio Carlos Jobim. In June 1992, she returned to Carnegie Hall for another JVC Jazz Festival performance. Caram has worked with various Latin jazz and bossa nova musicians, including Paquito D’Rivera, Sergio Assad, and Odair Assad. Her 1989 album Rio After Dark is now considered a bossa nova classic and was her debut for the audiophile label Chesky Records.

On Rio After Dark, Jobim accompanies his protégé on piano in Caram’s renditions of his classics “Meditation” and “Anos Dourados” and contributes to the backing vocals. Another special guest is Cuban-American Grammy-winning saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, who plays saxophone and clarinet on “La Cumbia” and “O Que Vier Eu Traço.” Accompanied by pianist, composer, and producer David Chesky, flutist Steve Sacks, bassist David Finck, and percussionists Carlos Alberto de Oliveira and Café, Caram demonstrates with her silky voice and syncopated guitar style that she is a fresh, authentic, and remarkable voice, continuing the glorious tradition of bossa nova.

Rio After Dark is a very special gem in the Chesky catalog, and we are proud to present this LP reissue as part of the “Chesky Original Masters” series: pressed using the superior One-Step process on 180-gram vinyl (33 RPM).
