The Tannoy Edinburgh represents the essence of refined listening, combining classic aesthetics with top-level technical design. Their sonic character is direct, engaging, rich in musicality, and deeply rooted in the Tannoy tradition—unlike many modern models with a more artificial sound. At the heart of these speakers lies the renowned 12" Tannoy 3149 coaxial driver, a sophisticated Dual Concentric unit that merges a direct-radiating woofer and a horn-loaded tweeter on a single axis, sharing a powerful central magnet. This configuration enables single-point sound emission, delivering excellent image focus and exceptionally precise spatial rendering.

The woofer features a Guard Acoustic Cone, developed with a special treatment applied to a rigid cone supplied by Kurt Müller in Germany, enhanced with eight radial reinforcements on the rear. This exclusive design reduces parasitic vibrations, improving transient response and power handling. The surround uses a shaped polymer material that effectively damps cone edge resonances, ensuring smoother and more controlled bass reproduction. The voice coils are hand-wound and treated to withstand temperatures up to 240°C, making them extremely robust and suitable for continuous high-power drive. The tweeter uses an inverted dome made of high-rigidity aluminum alloy, formed in six stages with progressive heat treatment to eliminate internal stress, along with an acoustically balanced rear chamber that reduces distortion and improves transient response. Phase correction is achieved through 19 apertures in the neck of the horn throat, and the woofer cone itself acts as an extended waveguide for the tweeter.

The original crossover, mounted on the front panel of the unit, is a first-order filter with a crossover frequency at 1200 Hz and features controls to fine-tune the high-frequency response. Adjustments can be made both to the roll-off above 5 kHz (4 levels from +1.5 dB to -3 dB) and to the overall tweeter energy between 1 kHz and 20 kHz (5 levels with ±3 dB variation), allowing a frequency response perfectly adaptable to the room and listener preferences. These adjustments are made via integrated selectors, with the "LEVEL" position corresponding to a flat response.

The cabinet is crafted from solid walnut wood, hand-finished with high-quality detailing that conveys a sense of warmth and solidity. The tuning system is a Tannoy patent: the Distributed Port System, featuring six oval openings (10 mm x 197 mm x 26 mm) distributed on the rear side panels, optimizing low-frequency performance. The front grilles are secured with locking keys to avoid unwanted resonances even at high volumes and are made of a special dual-weave fabric in ivory and brown. Attention to detail extends to maintenance as well: each speaker pair is supplied with wood wax, ideal for nourishing and enhancing the natural walnut finish.

Once integrated into a proper system and set up in a well-treated room, the Edinburgh truly impresses with their tonal coherence, low-end extension, and harmonic richness. In direct comparison with high-end reference speakers, these Tannoys hold their own—and even come close to legendary models like the Autograph, revealing a surprisingly balanced sound. Their ability to deliver a three-dimensional soundstage, a detailed midrange, and a physical, deep bass makes them highly appreciated by those seeking not just technical performance, but above all, musical emotion.
