The DAC-1 is the result of meticulous design and the integration of top-tier technologies, beginning with the core of the system: the ESS Sabre Reference 9018 chip, one of the most advanced on the market. This digital-to-analog converter can handle signals up to 32 bits and sampling frequencies up to 200 kHz via its coaxial digital inputs. For the optical TOSLINK inputs, the stable maximum sampling rate is 174.6 kHz, although in some cases it may reach up to 192 kHz. The USB input supports signals up to 24 bits and 96 kHz.

At the heart of the DAC-1 is an 8-channel ESS chip configured in quad-differential mode, with four parallel D/A conversion circuits per channel. This design choice allows for an exceptional signal-to-noise ratio and impressive output drive capability. The coaxial inputs are transformer-coupled to isolate the source while maintaining correct loading. Before conversion, digital signals are stabilized by TTL buffers to ensure consistent signal integrity.

Input selection is entirely managed by the ESS chip, which also functions as the receiver and handles signal routing. Internal automatic upsampling minimizes the need for output filtering and plays a crucial role in jitter reduction. Jitter is further eliminated through a reclocking process performed directly at the DAC’s input, aligned with the frequency selected by the ESS chip.

The power supply is another standout feature of the DAC-1, featuring an oversized toroidal transformer, over 115,000 µF of capacitance, three stages of filtering, and thirteen regulation points. The analog stages are powered by a dedicated supply completely isolated from the digital front-end, while auxiliary voltages are managed by separate lines to prevent interference. The digital board receives power from seven of the thirteen dedicated regulators, ensuring tight tolerances and consistent power delivery.

The analog output stage is the true highlight of the DAC-1. This proprietary discrete design was developed to deliver the cleanest, most transparent, and natural sound. The output amplification section, built on dual-differential FET architecture, uses precision Dale RN55d resistors for strict control. This layout provides both balanced and unbalanced outputs, both benefiting from common-mode noise rejection.

On the front panel, a two-line display allows for easy verification of the selected input and sample rate. When the DAC locks onto a signal, the sampling rate is shown clearly; otherwise, a series of dashes appears. Buttons next to the power switch allow scrolling through inputs, while a quick press of the central button activates mute. Holding the button powers the unit off, and a quick tap brings it back to life.
