The Audio Research VT60 presents itself as a power amplifier with a sober and functional character in its most essential version, featuring an aesthetic dominated by black panels and a top cover that protects the transformers and tubes through a perforated metal cage. In this configuration, the tubes are partially visible from above, while the silver-finished version places greater emphasis on the valve section by leaving it fully exposed, creating a more striking visual impact. Removing the top protection reveals a clean and rational internal layout, built with strong attention to the robustness of the printed circuit traces, intentionally wide and solid, in line with the brand’s design tradition.
The circuit topology is fully symmetrical, with the power transformer centrally positioned and the output transformers placed on either side, reflecting a design aimed at channel balance. The output stage uses 6550 pentode tubes in a push-pull configuration, a recurring choice in the manufacturer’s valve amplifiers and also common among other reference brands, while the input and driver stages are based on 6922 dual triodes, contributing to the unit’s dynamic and controlled character. The entire amplification section is stabilized by approximately 19 dB of negative feedback, while the internal components include high-quality capacitors and audiophile-grade resistors selected to ensure long-term consistency and reliability.
On the rear panel, the architecture continues to follow a symmetrical layout, with RCA inputs and speaker terminals neatly arranged around the center of the chassis. The output terminals are designed according to a typically American standard, favoring mechanical clamping of bare wire or spade connectors via screws, a solution that ensures a stable and highly effective electrical contact, especially under high current conditions. The power cable is permanently fixed to the chassis, in line with a design philosophy that prioritizes solidity over the modular approach typical of IEC connector solutions.
Operation of the amplifier requires some practical considerations, starting with correct matching between speaker impedance and output taps, with 4, 8, and 16 ohm options available depending on the system used. A warm-up period of approximately one hour is recommended before listening to allow the tubes to reach full operational stability, while switching the unit off when not in use helps extend tube life. Overall, the VT60 stands out for a rigorous and functional design approach that emphasizes reliability, control, and sonic coherence, typical of the Audio Research engineering tradition.
