The Copland CTA 405-A represents the evolution of the renowned CTA 405, a model that contributed significantly to the international reputation of the Danish brand in the field of integrated tube amplifiers. The design retains the predecessor's rated output of 50 watts per channel, while introducing a series of technical refinements aimed at increasing dynamic capability, available current and signal control. The output stage employs four KT120 tubes instead of the KT88 tubes used in the CTA 405, providing greater current reserves and a faster response to transients while maintaining the traditional tube-based design philosophy.

The amplifier circuit is designed to operate in Class A at lower power levels, before automatically switching to Class AB as the signal level increases, up to the rated 50 watts per channel. This solution combines the linearity and continuity of Class A operation during low- and medium-level listening with greater power availability when the musical programme requires wider dynamic swings. The upgraded output stage is supported by a completely redesigned power supply, featuring a toroidal transformer that has been enlarged and optimized to meet the higher current demands of the KT120 tubes, contributing to power supply stability and the amplifier's ability to handle demanding dynamic passages.

The use of KT120 tubes generates more heat than KT88 tubes and therefore requires a dedicated thermal management solution. The CTA 405-A incorporates a low-noise fan mounted on an aluminium structure mechanically isolated from the chassis by means of damping elements. This configuration minimizes the transmission of mechanical vibrations to the tubes, which are particularly sensitive to microphonic effects, helping to preserve signal clarity during operation.

The preamplifier and driver section employs two 12BH7 tubes and two 6922 tubes, while the integrated phono stage uses three E83CC tubes. The phono input allows a turntable to be connected directly to the amplifier and is designed for use with MM and high-output MC cartridges, providing the CTA 405-A with the functionality required to serve as the control centre of an analogue audio system without the need for an external phono preamplifier.

From a construction standpoint, the CTA 405-A retains the clean and distinctive design of the previous CTA 405, with deliberately restrained aesthetic changes. The stand-by button and model designation feature a red finish that visually distinguishes the new version, while the satin silver finish retains the brand's traditional character. A black finish is also available, offering a more contemporary appearance. The chassis retains dimensions and construction characteristics consistent with the previous model and weighs 27 kg, reflecting the attention given to mechanical solidity and the implementation of the power supply section.
