Stereo integrated amplifier designed to provide versatile source management and accurate music reproduction within a Hi-Fi system. The design combines careful construction with an amplifier section sized to provide good driving capability, while maintaining an overall approach focused on simplicity and reliability.

The input section provides seven analogue line-level inputs, allowing several different sources to be connected directly. A 3.5 mm jack input dedicated to portable music players is also provided on the front panel, making it easy to integrate this type of source without requiring additional connections.

The unit is controlled by a rotary encoder that allows precise volume adjustment and access to the main settings, including tone controls and balance. This solution avoids routing the audio signals to the front panel through mechanical potentiometers and switches, keeping the signal path more direct.

The power supply uses a toroidal transformer incorporated into a generously sized power supply section, designed to provide stability when reproducing passages with high current demands, particularly in the low-frequency range. The chassis also features a steel structure with damping treatment, referred to by Arcam as "Sound Dead Steel", which limits the transmission of mechanical vibrations to the electronic circuits.

The A18 uses selected components and multilayer printed circuit boards specifically designed to maintain consistent performance throughout the signal path. Its construction and range of inputs make it suitable for stereo systems with several analogue sources, including use with the ARCAM CD17 CD player for a coherent system configuration.
