The electrifying debut album Pain in My Heart introduced the world to one of the most powerful and emotionally compelling voices in soul history. This record also laid the foundation for Redding’s unmistakable style, combining raw passion, a surprising vulnerability, and an explosively distinctive vocal timbre, which would define one of soul music’s most glorious chapters.

Pain in My Heart is the first of six studio albums recorded by Redding before his legendary career was tragically cut short by a plane crash on December 10, 1967. The album features five original songs by Redding, including the timeless hit “These Arms of Mine,” his first major chart success, as well as “Hey Hey Baby,” influenced by Little Richard, “Security,” “That’s What My Heart Needs,” and “Something Is Worrying Me.” Notable covers include Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me,” Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me,” The Kingsmen’s “Louie Louie,” and Little Richard’s “Lucille.”

The tight backing band, featuring Booker T. & the M.G.’s and the Memphis Horns, provides a gritty, groove-laden foundation that makes every track electrifying.

This album marked the beginning of Otis Redding’s inimitable style, paving the way for the subsequent soul revolution. Fans of Redding can hear in Pain in My Heart the fiery approach that characterized the early phase of his career and propelled his legendary recordings and live performances. From the very first track, the vigorous, unfiltered soul that made Redding an enduring icon is unmistakable. In this sense, Pain in My Heart is much more than a successful debut—it is the essential first chapter of an unforgettable legacy.

This new title in the Atlantic 75 Series features all the qualities that have made Analogue Productions’ releases famous among audiophiles worldwide: meticulous remastering from the original masters, 45 RPM cutting by Bernie Grundman, pressing on two 180-gram LPs at Quality Record Pressings, and a luxurious old-style double-pocket gatefold cover with Stoughton Printing inserts.
