A Magical Alchemist at Die Glocke
Die Glocke, one of Europe’s most beloved concert halls favored by Herbert von Karajan, is an unusual octagonal venue in the Hanseatic city of Bremen. Built in 1737, it has survived several damaging fires over the centuries while maintaining one of the finest acoustics on the continent.
On a crisp evening in April 1961, in front of an audience of over 1,400 enthusiasts, the towering figure of Oscar Peterson sat at the piano, accompanied by two of his most loyal musicians: Ray Brown, affectionately known as “the beautiful bassist,” and Ed Thigpen, one of New York’s most renowned and sought-after jazz drummers.
The tireless engineers at The Lost Recordings located the original tapes of this legendary concert in the archives of Bremen Radio and meticulously restored them over several weeks. Peterson, often regarded as a brilliant musical alchemist and in some ways a Pygmalion of jazz, continuously evolved throughout his career. Known as a master of swing, in this concert Peterson surpassed himself in every aspect. Throughout his life, he consistently expanded his repertoire and reinvented his style while remaining true to his core musical principles. His legacy continues to bring a magical freshness to jazz and remains invaluable.
