We must thank our lucky stars that Nina Simone was fully aware of her musical environment and enjoyed experimenting, despite her notoriously eccentric personality. This is the only reason why so much of her core repertoire—traditional blues pieces, songs of Black laborers, and the most beautiful Christmas songs, all infused with a deep soul vein—reached her fans.
First, we can hear an explosive live medley of George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord and David Nelson’s Today Is A Killer. Accompanied by a small group of musicians and a gospel choir, Nina delivers an unforgettable eighteen-minute performance. In contrast to the gentle Poppies, which whimsically combines strings, brass, and choir, we have the contemplative Isn’t It A Pity, arranged for piano. In this track, Nina Simone has the opportunity to showcase her exceptionally wide vocal range, which often fades slowly into a question left unanswered.
