Farewell Angelina is one of the most extraordinary folk albums in history. The sixth album by folk icon Joan Baez, it was released in 1965 by Vanguard Records (an outstanding recording!) and reached number ten on the Billboard 200 chart.
The album features traditional folk songs alongside tracks by Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and others.
The title track, “Farewell Angelina,” was written by Bob Dylan in the 1960s. He originally intended to include it on his album Bringing It All Back Home but changed his mind after an initial recording. The song was later recorded by Joan Baez for this album, achieving great success.
Farewell Angelina tells the story of a young man about to leave for war, likely inspired by the Vietnam War, in which the United States was deeply involved at the time the song was written.
An essential album not to be missed.
