Janis Joplin died in October 1970 at the age of just 27, inadvertently confirming the famous Beat Generation adage: “live fast, love hard, die young.” Her discography is short and extremely diverse, much like her life. After two LPs recorded with members of Big Brother and the Holding Company—whose excellent support helped Janis secure her first contract with Columbia Records in 1968—the American label provided her with a larger band, including organ and several brass instruments.
Columbia’s intention was to expand her vocal expression with blues and funk elements; unfortunately, Joplin’s fans considered this a betrayal of rock ideals. Rock fans in Europe were less critical, especially after Janis and the Kozmic Blues Band completed a two-month European tour. This album is an essential must-have for all Janis Joplin fans.
