Bill Evans was deeply affected by the death of his bassist Scott LaFaro and did not feel ready to record again with a new bassist until a year later. When he entered the studio in May–June 1962 with Chuck Israels and drummer Paul Motian, the second trio recorded material for two albums that would become among Evans’ most popular releases.
Moonbeams presents Bill Evans at his best, showcasing his lyrical approach, underpinned by exceptional rhythmic firmness, even on the remarkable slow rendition of “In Love in Vain”.
