The REL Storm MKIII is an active subwoofer designed to extend low-frequency response while integrating naturally with the main loudspeaker system. Drawing on REL Acoustics' extensive expertise in dedicated low-frequency loudspeaker design, it has been developed to reproduce not only conventional bass, but also the deepest subsonic frequencies found in musical recordings and movie soundtracks, contributing to a more complete recreation of ambience and the acoustic information contained within the original recording.
The design features an exceptionally rigid, thick MDF cabinet with extensive internal bracing to minimize unwanted resonances and vibrations. This robust construction provides a stable mechanical platform for the driver while maintaining precise performance even during the most demanding low-frequency passages. The enclosure is supported by dedicated feet that optimize floor coupling and enhance the effectiveness of the downward-firing design.
The amplification section employs a 150-watt continuous direct-coupled discrete MOSFET amplifier powered by an audiophile-grade toroidal transformer. This configuration ensures stable power delivery, excellent driver control, and highly dynamic performance even during complex musical passages.
The 250 mm long-throw downward-firing driver, mounted on a heavy-duty cast chassis, is engineered to move substantial volumes of air while maintaining precision and control. The system tuning provides deep, extended bass without artificially emphasizing the upper bass region, allowing seamless integration with the main loudspeakers and a more natural reproduction of the musical programme.
One of REL's distinctive design features is the ability to connect the subwoofer directly to the speaker outputs of the main amplifier via the high-level Neutrik Speakon connector. This approach allows the subwoofer to receive exactly the same signal as the main loudspeakers, preserving the amplifier's sonic character and achieving more coherent integration with the rest of the audio system. Standard and high-sensitivity RCA line-level inputs are also provided, together with balanced inputs, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of electronics.
The control panel offers independent adjustments for both high-level and low-level input gain, allowing precise optimization of the subwoofer's performance within virtually any system. The low-pass filter incorporates REL's proprietary ABC circuit, adjustable in twenty-four musically correct semi-tone increments between 22 Hz and 96 Hz, enabling exceptionally accurate matching to the main loudspeakers. A dedicated mode selector also includes phase adjustment and allows operation in both conventional stereo systems and home theatre installations, where the subwoofer can simultaneously reproduce the stereo amplifier's signal and the processor's dedicated LFE channel.
The fully discrete input circuitry and the Set-Safe® protection system safeguard the driver without introducing audible degradation to the audio signal, ensuring uncompromised sound quality even at high playback levels.
Hand-built in the United Kingdom, the REL Storm MKIII is designed to deliver deep, controlled, and articulate bass while integrating seamlessly into high-quality Hi-Fi and Home Theatre systems without compromising tonal balance, transparency, or overall musical coherence.
