The Thorens TD 1600 draws on the tradition of the historic 160 series and integrates it with design solutions developed according to modern principles. The wooden plinth, available in walnut or high-gloss black lacquer, retains the characteristic aesthetic of Thorens turntables, complemented by a satin-finished aluminum top plate, a two-part platter with an internal belt drive, a thick rubber mat, a separate tonearm board and an acrylic dust cover.

The sub-chassis suspension system uses three conical springs positioned at the base of the structure rather than suspended from the top panel. A thin yet strong steel thread connects the sub-chassis to a pin fixed to the bottom of the plinth, limiting lateral movement and allowing exclusively vertical movement. This configuration isolates the playback system from external vibrations and helps maintain stable tracking even during start-up, when the motor's higher torque tends to exert lateral tension on the platter belt.

The motor is managed by dedicated control electronics that generate an AC voltage specifically calibrated for motor operation, with controlled phase and amplitude. The system ensures constant rotational speed and precise synchronization, while vibrations generated by the motor are contained by the drive belt and the sub-chassis suspension system.

The two-part platter features an internal belt drive and a belt-tension adjustment system, allowing the drive mechanism to be optimized. The plinth and sub-chassis are also designed to maintain effective isolation when using record clamps weighing up to approximately 500 grams; for heavier accessories, the suspension can be adjusted using the screws accessible from the underside of the plinth.

The Thorens TD 1600 is equipped with the 9-inch Thorens TP 92 precision tonearm, designed to provide a stable and precise interface with the cartridge and to work correctly with the turntable's suspension system. The construction of the tonearm and its mounting contributes to accurate groove tracking and effective isolation from vibrations generated by the environment and the drive system.

The rear panel provides both unbalanced RCA analog outputs and balanced XLR connections. The balanced configuration allows the turntable to take advantage of the inherently balanced nature of the signal generated by the cartridge and to connect to devices equipped with XLR inputs. The turntable also features a dedicated external power supply connected to the motor control electronics integrated into the plinth.
