The Teac X-2000R is an outstanding open-reel tape recorder (RTR) from the 1990s, designed to deliver professional-level performance even to non-specialist users. It features full auto-reverse for both recording and playback, six independent heads for erasing, recording, and playback, a dual-capstan mechanism with closed-loop tension control to ensure proper tape contact with the heads, and servo-controlled reel motors with tape tension sensors on both arms. The X-2000R also integrates a type I dbx noise reduction system, a digital counter with second-level precision, and advanced locator functions, allowing precise control of recording times, track positioning, and silent intervals via the Auto-Spacer function.

The playback system is based on cobalt amorphous (CA) heads paired with specially designed equalizer amplifiers, providing an almost flat response up to 40 kHz. The standard recording level is set at +6 dB, compatible with high-performance EE tapes, while the dbx system compresses the original signal during recording and restores it during playback, achieving a high dynamic range up to 106 dB and significantly reducing tape noise.

The closed-loop dual-capstan mechanism with full tape tension servo reduces modulation noise and ensures stable tape transport, while the erase head mounted outside the capstan shaft shortens the tape span and enhances overall stability. The amplifier section uses a fully push-pull vertically symmetrical configuration with bootstrap circuitry and advanced phase compensation, providing high stability, low distortion, and high gain.

The X-2000R also features the CES (Computer Matic Edit System) for digital editing via microcomputer, enabling functions such as programmed playback, counter reset to zero (S.T.Z.), return to cue point (S.T.C.), and block repeat for cycling through selected tape sections. It offers 1-3/4-2 track selection, ±10% fine bias adjustment, independent L/R recording and monitor controls, real-time pause, and a soft electromagnetic brake to protect the tape.

The recorder includes a dedicated EE tape selector, improving frequency response, dynamic range, and reducing noise. The construction is robust, with a 5 mm thick front panel, precise mechanics, and the option to connect a remote control unit.
