The Copland CDA823 is a CD player designed to deliver highly accurate digital playback, building upon the design of the earlier CDA822 with a series of refinements to the disc-reading mechanism, digital-to-analogue conversion stage, and analogue output circuitry. While retaining the core design principles of its predecessor, it introduces new technologies aimed at improving accuracy, transparency, and signal stability.

The transport reads discs at four times the speed required for standard CD playback, a solution developed to increase data-reading precision and reduce the likelihood of read errors. The signal is then processed through a dual-stage resampling system with 192 kHz oversampling, allowing the analogue output filter to be simplified while preserving harmonic content, transparency, and overall musical integrity.

Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a high-resolution 24-bit dual differential DAC with current-output architecture, designed to provide wide dynamic range, fast conversion, and very low noise. Timing accuracy is maintained through sample-rate converters working in conjunction with a high-precision internal master clock, significantly reducing jitter and contributing to a more stable and accurate audio signal.

The audio circuitry is powered by multiple independently regulated power supplies dedicated to the various sections of the player. This design improves operational stability while minimizing interference between the different circuit stages. The analogue output stage provides both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA connections, allowing straightforward integration into a wide range of Hi-Fi systems.

Particular attention has been given to the analogue output stage, which employs discrete Class A amplifiers rather than relying exclusively on integrated operational amplifiers. This approach allows each stage to be optimized for its specific operating conditions, giving the designers greater control over overall performance and analogue signal quality.

The CDA823 also supports future firmware upgrades through flash-programmable microprocessors, allowing software enhancements to be implemented without modifying the hardware.

By combining a high-precision transport, advanced digital conversion, and a carefully engineered analogue output stage, the Copland CDA823 is designed to provide accurate, natural, and coherent CD playback while remaining faithful to the original recording.
