The Naim CD5x CD player perfectly embodies the historic philosophy of the British brand, long committed to prioritizing musical substance over mere sonic spectacle. Since the 1970s, Naim has developed electronics designed to preserve rhythm, timing, and musical dynamics with extreme precision, minimizing the distortions that tend to blur the attack and decay of notes. With the CD5x, Naim further refines its entry-level series by introducing significant technical and structural improvements while preserving the unmistakable sonic identity that has made the brand renowned among audiophiles. The player is directly derived from the earlier CD3 model, introduced in the 1990s and appreciated for its innovative manually operated swing-out transport tray. This solution eliminates the need for a motorized drawer, favoring greater mechanical simplicity and improved isolation of the optical assembly. In the CD5x, this configuration is further enhanced through a revised internal design and the adoption of the Philips VAM1202 transport mechanism.

Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by a dual-mono 24-bit Burr-Brown DAC, while digital filtering relies on the highly regarded Pacific Microsonics PMD200 chip, selected not specifically for HDCD compatibility but for its superior sonic performance and its ability to process digital signals with exceptional precision. Internally, the player reflects Naim’s traditional attention to power supply stability and voltage regulation: the main circuit board incorporates no fewer than 19 discrete regulators, while the analog section benefits from a dedicated separate board fitted with additional LM317 regulators and discrete current-to-voltage conversion components.

The chassis construction also represents a major advancement over previous models. The aluminum enclosure features a compact and solid structure finished in textured black paint and supported by specially designed isolation feet intended to improve mechanical decoupling. The overall rigidity helps minimize unwanted vibrations and resonances, contributing to a cleaner and more precise sound reproduction.

In keeping with the company’s design philosophy, the CD5x does not include a digital output. Naim believes that the signal path should remain as direct and unobstructed as possible, avoiding the use of external DACs that could compromise musical timing accuracy. However, the player includes a dedicated connection for external Naim FlatCap 2 or HiCap 2 power supplies, allowing the analog stages to benefit from a separate and upgraded power source for even higher sonic performance.

The rear panel features both the traditional five-pin DIN connection favored by Naim and a pair of gold-plated RCA outputs selectable via remote control. This dual configuration ensures greater compatibility with a wide range of audio systems without sacrificing the brand’s distinctive engineering approach.

Operation remains deliberately simple and focused on maximum performance. Once powered on, the player is designed to remain continuously active in order to achieve optimal sonic results after the circuitry has fully warmed up. Disc loading is entirely manual via the swing-out tray and characteristic magnetic puck clamp, while disc recognition takes only a few seconds.

Sonically, the CD5x stands out for its energetic, weighty, and highly involving presentation. The player delivers impressive tonal richness, a more convincing stereo image than its predecessors, and above all an extraordinary ability to preserve musical timing and flow. Rather than emphasizing the flaws of a recording, the CD5x focuses attention on the expressive qualities of the music itself, reproducing rhythm, phrasing, and dynamics with rare naturalness.
