The PIONEER SPEC-3 is a stereo preamplifier from the SPEC series, designed to handle multiple audio sources and provide extensive control over the signal within a Hi-Fi system. Its connections include two Phono inputs with eight selectable load settings, one Tuner input, two AUX inputs and two Tape inputs, as well as a dedicated DIN socket for compatible equipment.

The phono section is designed for use with turntables and features a three-stage, direct-coupled Class A equalizer circuit. The two dedicated phono inputs and selectable load settings allow the connection to be adjusted to the characteristics of the cartridge being used.

The tone controls allow separate adjustment of bass and treble, with selectable turnover frequencies. A tone defeat switch is also provided, allowing the signal to be heard without tone-control processing. The subsonic filter attenuates unwanted very low frequencies, while the muting function temporarily reduces the signal level. Stereo/mono selection provides additional listening control.

For tape recorder operation, the SPEC-3 features monitoring and tape-copying functions, allowing the signal to be monitored during recording and recordings to be transferred between two compatible tape recorders. The two preamplifier outputs allow connection to one or more power amplifiers, providing flexibility when configuring the system.

With its range of connections and controls, the PIONEER SPEC-3 is suitable for more elaborate stereo systems requiring the management of multiple analogue sources and equipment dedicated to playback and recording.
