The Musical Fidelity A1 is a solid-state stereo integrated amplifier operating in Class A, characterized by a straightforward construction and an output power of 20 W per channel into 8 ohms. The design uses a discrete-component amplification stage and a power supply sized to support Class A operation, with a configuration intended to keep the signal path simple and direct.

One of the A1's most distinctive features is its particular metal chassis with a large aluminium top surface, which also serves as a heatsink for the output-stage transistors. The heat generated by Class A operation is therefore transferred directly to the upper part of the unit, which can reach high temperatures during normal use. The structure also contributes to the amplifier's distinctive appearance, differing from the layout of traditional integrated amplifiers equipped with large internal heatsinks.

The input section includes a phono stage compatible with MM and MC cartridges, along with several line inputs for connecting analogue sources. CD, Tuner and Aux inputs are provided, as well as a Tape connection with a corresponding recording output. The amplifier also features a Pre Out, allowing the preamplifier signal to be used with external equipment.

The front panel layout is particularly simple, with the main functions limited to source selection, volume control and power. The A1 does not use tone controls, favouring a configuration reduced to the essentials and a signal path without circuits intended to adjust frequency response.

The design, developed by Pentagram, combines the angled front panel with the characteristic upper structure used for heat dissipation. The result is a compact and easily recognisable amplifier in which the technical configuration and cooling system form an integral part of the unit's appearance.
