The Marantz PM7200 is a powerful and well-built amplifier, capable of delivering 95 watts per channel into 8 ohms and up to 155 watts into 4 ohms, with the option to operate in 25-watt pure Class A mode. The output stage is fully discrete and copper-shielded, featuring HDAM (High Definition Amplifier Module) technology, ensuring high signal definition and linearity. The use of premium components and careful construction guarantees rich, detailed, and reliable sound reproduction.

The front panel, large and solid, is made from a single black anodized metal plate (also available in a gold variant) with large selector and volume knobs, giving the unit a robust yet refined appearance, typical of Marantz design. The amplifier offers seven signal inputs, including a phono input for moving magnet (MM) cartridges, and can be operated via remote control, including volume adjustment.

The PM7200 is rich in switching options: it includes phono preamps for dynamic cartridges, with dedicated inputs and outputs for external sound processors or equalizers. The front panel features LED source indicators, a load selector, a convenient rotary recording switch, a tone control block with a bypass button, and a Class A mode activation button. This feature, rare in mid-range devices, allows switching from the more dynamic AB mode to the warmer, more musical Class A mode, changing tonal balance and the character of acoustic instruments.

The amplifier requires attention to speaker selection: it is designed for linear loads and does not perform well with very low impedances. When using a single pair of speakers, the minimum recommended impedance is 8 ohms, while with two pairs in parallel, it should not drop below 16 ohms. This characteristic makes the PM7200 sensitive to load conditions but also contributes to achieving higher sound quality.

In AB mode, the sound is dynamic, detailed, and spacious, with good resolution and balanced tonal quality, although stage separation is not always perfectly discrete and the high frequencies may be slightly emphasized. Switching to Class A, the tonal balance remains similar, but the music gains warmth and naturalness: voices become more present, acoustic instruments sound richer and more engaging, while the treble calms and the soundstage deepens. Microdynamics are excellent, although overall power is lower, and the PM7200 is not suitable for very intense orchestral passages.

The Marantz PM7200 offers two complementary approaches: AB mode is ideal for lively, powerful music, while Class A highlights delicate passages and acoustic instruments, providing flexibility and high-quality sound in different listening situations.
