Boss Guitar is the ninth album by the legendary guitarist Wes Montgomery, originally released in 1963 by Riverside Records. Toward the end of his bop period, Montgomery frequently recorded with his fellow Hoosier and Hammond B-3 master Melvin Rhyne. The first result of these sessions was Boss Guitar, recorded in the early months of 1963, also featuring the great drummer Jimmy Cobb. Among the standout tracks are the electrifying 6/8 version of “Besame Mucho,” Montgomery’s famous funky blues “Fried Pies,” and the virtuosic piece “The Trick Bag.” A classic of the bop era, the album has stood the test of time. AllMusic critic Alex Henderson commented: “Boss Guitar is one of Montgomery’s bop albums that deserves careful listening even many years later.”
