180-gram LP

Remastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original analog tapes

Pressed at RTI

Joe Harley, co-founder and co-producer of the highly successful “Tone Poet” audiophile vinyl reissue series, serves as curator for this new collection of fully analog remasters sourced from the original tapes, pressed on 180-gram audiophile LPs, and presented in a luxurious gatefold jacket. The remastering was done by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, and the LP pressing was handled by the renowned American company Record Technology Incorporated (RTI). Each title in this series was carefully selected by Harley, including lesser-known Blue Note classics, major modern successes, and some albums originally released on other labels associated with the Blue Note catalog. Every detail of these reissues—from the cover artwork to the exceptional sound quality achieved through Kevin Gray’s remastering and the flawless vinyl pressing by RTI—has been meticulously overseen to meet the highest possible standards. These releases are simply unmatched.

Nicknamed the Tone Poet, Joe Harley set out to create an audiophile reissue series allowing 21st-century listeners to hear the music exactly as the musicians heard it from the original analog tapes and Rudy Van Gelder’s studio monitors fifty or sixty years ago. Harley firmly believes that, in terms of quality, Blue Note albums have never reached the level of these reissues. In his own words: “Every aspect of these Blue Note reissues has been handled down to the smallest detail. You will not find a version of comparable quality.”

Between 1964 and 1967, legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter created a series of compositions of immense value that would influence countless jazz musicians of his generation and the next. Stylistically, these works lie between acoustic jazz and classic albums like Night Dreamer, JuJu, Speak No Evil, and Adam’s Apple, which would soon showcase Shorter’s brilliant and highly original style in ensembles of varying lineups led by modern jazz masters.

With Schizophrenia, released in 1967, Shorter reached the pinnacle of post-bop, surveying the horizon of contemporary jazz. His music already carried an avant-garde current, and two years later he would enter the Blue Note studio again for Super Nova, exploring the boundaries of fusion. In 1967, however, Shorter produced one of his most complete and stylistically diverse albums, featuring a sextet of innovative musicians including James Spaulding on alto sax and flute, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Joe Chambers. Among the six original compositions on this album are some of Shorter’s most enduring works, including the unforgettable “Tom Thumb,” the evocative “Go,” the beautiful ballad “Miyako,” and Spaulding’s brilliant “Kryptonite.”
