In 1959, Sonny Stitt was featured in several excellent recording sessions, particularly in the final months of the year, when over the span of just three days he recorded three albums for Verve with pianist Lou Levy, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Mel Lewis. Playing alto saxophone on every track of Blows the Blues, Stitt firmly stepped out of the long shadow of Charlie Parker, proving he was far more than just a mere imitator—a criticism too often repeated by less perceptive reviewers of the time, which unfortunately hindered much of his career. The album includes several outstanding original compositions, especially notable are “Hymnal Blues” and the slow, emotionally charged “Morning After Blues.”
This album was first released in 1970.
