Although it's hard to believe, this album bubbles and overflows with energy from the first minute to the last, even though the piano seat remains empty! Accustomed to playing together since their time with John Coltrane, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones lead the trio to the peak of their abilities. From time to time, one might suspect that Elvin Jones has four hands and four feet, while Jimmy Garrison treats his double bass as if it were a large guitar. From the very beginning, the driving rhythm challenges Sonny Rollins' tenor sax, a challenge he accepts and wins. East Broadway Run Down starts as a blues and continues with a free-form vein expressed in all its forms. Each of the 1235 seconds of this album represents a crucial part of a chapter in jazz history written on May 9, 1966. The significance of this album becomes even more evident when listening to the impressive sound quality of this LP reissue. Despite its 40 years, this album remains an invaluable treasure for jazz lovers.
