The legendary trumpeter Miles Davis was still at the beginning of his incomparable career when he entered the recording studio for the Blue Note sessions recorded in 1952, 1953, and 1954. By the late 1940s, Davis had already been part of Charlie Parker’s quintet and Dizzy Gillespie’s big band, and had also recorded several sessions as a leader, most notably the essential Birth of the Cool sessions released by Capitol Records.

Davis’s star was still clearly rising when he signed with Alfred Lion and Blue Note, but he was already firmly on the path that would lead him to become one of the greatest bandleaders in jazz history. Originally released on three 10-inch LPs titled Young Man With a Horn, Vol. 2, and Vol. 3, these Blue Note recordings showcase all the defining characteristics of Miles Davis’s early style, from driving bebop passages to deeply expressive and melancholic ballads. When Blue Note began issuing 12-inch LPs in 1955, Lion compiled these recordings into two volumes, launching the 1500 series.

Volume 2 (Blue Note 1502) includes tracks recorded across all three sessions by Miles’s stellar sextet, featuring top-tier musicians such as trombonist J.J. Johnson, saxophonists Jackie McLean and Jimmy Heath, pianists Gil Coggins and Horace Silver, bassists Oscar Pettiford and Percy Heath, and drummers Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey.

This new mono title in the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition has been produced using strictly analog technology, remastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal in Germany.
