On April 29, 2016 Zubin Mehta celebrated his eightieth birthday in the splendid Brahms-Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, where Mrs. Lichtenegger – representing Heinz Lichtenegger, engaged in New York – gave the famous maestro his birthday present, namely a limited edition vinyl copy of this with the stunning Debut Carbon Esprit SB turntable. This 180 gram audiophile double LP is a must-have for any fan nostalgic for the fabled analogue era. Presented with a perfect reproduction of the original sleeve, this disc has been remastered with infinite care from the original analogue tapes at Abbey Road studios, London. Recorded in 1975, this true milestone of Mahlerian discography possesses all the qualities one could wish for, from the perfect tempo breaks of Mehta, to the refined vocals of Ileana Cotrubas, Christa Ludwig and the choir of the Vienna State Opera and the magnificent sound drapery by the Wiener Philharmoniker, among which the brass sections stand out in particular.
