There are jazz records that document a moment — and then there are records that reveal an entire life. Laughin' to Keep from Cryin' belongs firmly to the latter category.
Recorded in 1958, just one year before his death, this session finds Lester Young — the eternally relaxed and unassuming “Pres” — in a reflective and deeply human state of mind. Rather than following contemporary trends, Young returns to the language he helped define during the swing era, reconnecting with kindred spirits such as Harry “Sweets” Edison and Roy Eldridge. What emerges is not nostalgia, but something richer: a conversation between masters who no longer have anything to prove.
From the opening phrases, an unmistakable tone can be heard — light as air, yet filled with experience. Young’s tenor saxophone does not push; it floats, phrasing slightly behind the beat with the unmistakable elasticity that influenced generations of musicians. In a rare and significant move, he also returns to the clarinet on two tracks — the first time he had recorded with the instrument since the 1930s — adding a woody, intimate texture that feels almost like a private observation addressed directly to the listener.
Standards such as “They Can’t Take That Away from Me”, “Gypsy in My Soul” and “Salute to Benny” are performed with grace and restraint. The interplay between Edison’s and Eldridge’s trumpets provides a striking contrast, creating a session that moves naturally between different shades without ever losing its introspective core.
For the audiophile, this reissue further enhances the experience. Mastered by Matthew Luthans at The Mastering Lab from the original analog tape and pressed on pristine, quiet 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, the presentation does justice to every nuance of Young’s gentle attack and fading phrases.
