Originally released by Verve in 1966, Jimmy & Wes (The Dynamic Duo) represents the sole result of the long studio collaboration between organist Jimmy Smith and the legendary guitarist Wes Montgomery. Produced by Creed Taylor with arrangements by Oliver Nelson, Jimmy & Wes brought together two of the most brilliant and original jazz musicians of the mid-1960s alongside a stunning big band. Recorded over three days in September 1966 at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs, the album features a rich reed and brass section supported by an extraordinary rhythm section led by bassist Richard Davis and drummer Grady Tate. Montgomery’s melodic guitar lines and Smith’s powerful organ grooves are elevated by Nelson’s vibrant, engaging arrangements, full of intricate timbral nuances and rhythmic brilliance. The album captures the fortunate meeting of two jazz giants at perhaps their most inspired period, complemented by one of the most ingenious arrangers of the era.
