When a jazz enthusiast starts humming “Flying Home,” it is common for friends to say: “Hey, I know this tune—it’s Lionel Hampton’s ‘Flying Home,’ with an amazing solo by Illinois Jacquet!” Few pieces are as inseparably linked to a musician as this. Born to a Sioux father and Creole mother, Illinois Jacquet built his reputation on the astonishing improvisations he performed with Count Basie’s orchestra and his acclaimed appearances in Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts.

On the six tracks of this remarkable album, pianist Jimmy Jones does more than simply accompany a star soloist; he interacts with Jacquet’s tenor sax with incisive, compelling chords. The exceptional skill of all musicians is particularly evident on “Harlem Nocturne,” where Jacquet’s saxophone reaches incredible intensity. This is contrasted by the driving rhythm of “Achtung,” which leaves listeners breathless. The program concludes with an inventive rendition of “Have You Met Miss Jones?” and the quintessential swing masterpiece, “Lullaby of the Leaves.”
