Surrounded by an exceptional line-up — trombonist Curtis Fuller, tenor saxophonist John Gilmore, in a rare and revealing appearance outside the orbit of Sun Ra, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Art Davis and drummer Louis Hayes — Hubbard creates a session that feels both meticulously arranged and electrifying. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio, this album marked Hubbard’s debut as a bandleader for the Impulse! label.

The album features three original compositions by Hubbard, each revealing his talent for memorable themes and inventive structures, while leaving ample room for the band’s expressive interaction. His trumpet playing is already unmistakable: bold yet lyrical, capable of dazzling speed and precision while always remaining grounded in a deep sense of melody.
