Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard made an immediate impact on the jazz world with his Blue Note debut, Open Sesame, in 1960. Within 14 months, he had recorded three more hard bop classics — Goin’ Up, Hub Cap and Ready for Freddie — each showcasing his dynamic style.
Recorded in April 1961, Hub Cap was the first of Hubbard’s Blue Note albums to highlight his growing abilities as a composer. Four of the album’s six tracks were written by Hubbard, including the energetic title track, the seductive and nuanced “Luana”, and the swaggering, swinging shuffle of “Osie Mae”.
The music comes to life through a tightly knit sextet, with trombonist Julian Priester and tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath joining Hubbard on the front line, backed by a rhythm section featuring pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Larry Ridley and drummer Philly Joe Jones.
