Originally released by Capitol Records in 1955, Frank Sinatra’s iconic In The Wee Small Hours is a poignant masterpiece about lost love and heartbreak, marking a turning point in the legendary singer’s career. Produced by Voyle Gilmore, the album reflects Sinatra’s artistic evolution toward a more mature vocal style, featuring breathtaking interpretations of Great American Songbook classics accompanied by Nelson Riddle’s sublime arrangements. Sinatra conceived In The Wee Small Hours as a cohesive album rather than a collection of singles, creating one of the first concept albums and one of the earliest pop albums released as a 12-inch LP. The record was an immediate critical and commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard chart and revitalizing Sinatra’s career following his signing with Capitol Records in 1953 and his Academy Award-winning role in From Here to Eternity.
This 1955 Sinatra album for Capitol Records is reissued in Blue Note Records’ acclaimed Tone Poet audiophile series for its 70th anniversary. Produced by Joe Harley (the “Tone Poet”), this edition comes in a gatefold cover featuring studio session photographs by William Claxton and Ken Veeder, as well as an essay by Rita Kirwan. The mono masters used for this release are nearly pristine, having been used only sporadically decades ago for a few singles—effectively making them as good as new. Joe Harley comments: “The difference in fidelity is shocking. The sound is stunning… Frank is in the room. It’s as if a veil has been lifted.”
