Sequel to another historic record by MA RECORDINGS, It will be no night, a title that also appeared on the pages of 'Venerdì di Repubblica' (11/05/2001) with an article by the mourner Enzo Siciliano
This is what we wrote on the commentary of the first volume.
Here's another MA masterpiece that will remain in the hearts of listeners for a long time, one of those records like few are born in a year, do you remember Luz Destino? A disc difficult to describe due to its complexity but absolutely not to be missed. It gives us an immense pleasure to use the words of a very dear friend - a profound admirer of Ma Recordings records - to try to make you understand what this record truly represents. There is no doubt that the tango, more than a fashion, now represents a little mania for the Italians, always hungry for new exoticisms or nostalgics - but too often performed through the mediation of improbable leaps of fantasy - dives into the past. Everything and more than everything has been said about the tango: melancholy and passion, sensuality and purity, revolutionism and conservatism. Much has been said and a great deal has been danced, but little has been heard. For those chosen ones who have recovered Gardel and placed Piazzolla in the right place, tango is a forma mentis, but, again, perhaps they only know the intellectual 'form' of the tango, the exciting, yet partial, world of extraordinary characters, epochal dramas , lights of genius and shadows of death that have accompanied its 'involuntary' history. The tango is yes Gardel, yes Piazzolla, yes the stories of Borges (who repudiates it only in words, or repudiates the sticky little culture that is often built around him) but it is also much more. It is a rare meeting and magnificence of rich and poor cultures, distant in census and geography. A classical and experimental musical genre at the same time, weighty and complex as perhaps never any 'genre' - well delimited by formal and often academic canons - has reached. Santiago Vasquez is certainly one of the most interesting and fascinating characters moving on the scene of the Argentine 'new tango'. Strengthened by a powerful and extremely assimilated classical culture, a decidedly unusual musicological curiosity, an expressive capacity that results in originality of writing and interpretation. Tango is an album of extraordinary beauty and richness. The popular themes and songs, the standards and the original compositions are not afraid of the 'compilation' juxtaposition, the distinction is clear, yet there is a fusion of inspiration, of expressiveness, of intentions, in the respect that is necessarily interpretation, which only great musicians know how to have towards great music. You love her and act like a great lover, and a great lover never abuses his beauty. Even when, in the shadows, he barely glimpses her features and wants to focus his thoughts and attention on them, he is capable of immediately recalling the entire figure, down to the smallest, apparently least important, detail. This is what Santiago Velasquez does, this is his interpretation of the tango and of the tangos and of the music which - and it could not be otherwise - found new inspiration and copious enrichment in the tango. That's why this record is simply and presumptuously called 'Tango'. The spirit, which for us Latins, of Catholic formation, is an even deeper concept than the soul, the tango.
Finally this exceptional recording is available on 180 gram vinyl.
The generous length of more than seventy minutes of great music and its complexity forced the engineer who followed the remastering to divide the program into two LPs. Dynamics, micro-contrast, and low frequency impact are at an impressive level, and the already excellent CD version is vastly surpassed by this release.
But beyond the technical comparisons, let's enjoy this unforgettable album.
