The SVS PB-17 Ultra R|Evolution is an active bass reflex subwoofer designed to deliver low-frequency reproduction characterized by deep extension, exceptional dynamic capability, and precise signal control. It is engineered to meet the demands of both Home Theater and high-end Hi-Fi systems, combining the impact required for cinematic soundtracks with the accuracy and articulation needed for music reproduction.

The system features a high-excursion 17-inch front-firing driver specifically developed to operate at very high sound pressure levels while maintaining linear performance. Its fiberglass composite cone combines rigidity with low mass, while the oversized ferrite magnet assembly provides precise cone control even under demanding operating conditions. A catenary-profile SBR rubber surround and dual Nomex spiders keep cone movement stable throughout its entire excursion, reducing distortion and preserving low-frequency accuracy.

The driver employs dual 8-inch voice coils with four-layer bifilar windings made from copper-clad aluminum wire. This design improves current handling and heat dissipation, ensuring fast dynamic response and precise control of the driver.

Power is provided by the SVS Sledge STA-2800D amplifier, configured as a dual-mono Class D design with MOSFET output stages. Each amplifier channel independently drives one of the driver's two voice coils, increasing control and current delivery. The amplifier produces 2,800 watts RMS and more than 6,000 watts of peak power, enabling the subwoofer to reproduce even the most demanding dynamic passages with ease.

The power supply uses an active Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) with Power Factor Correction (PFC), designed to stabilize the operating voltage and reduce electrical interference from the mains. Cooling is achieved through a convection-based airflow system optimized to eliminate the need for large external heatsinks.

Signal processing is handled by a 295 MHz Analog Devices DSP, which continuously monitors the system's operating parameters and optimizes performance in real time. Through the SVS control app, users can adjust volume, crossover frequency, phase, polarity, room gain compensation, and parametric equalization, as well as store custom presets for different listening applications.

The system also incorporates SVS Auto EQ, allowing automatic room calibration using either a smartphone microphone or an optional external microphone. The processing compensates for the main acoustic irregularities of the listening room, producing a smoother and more balanced low-frequency response.

One of the distinctive features of the design is the ability to modify the behavior of the bass reflex enclosure by changing the port configuration. The subwoofer can operate with all ports open for the standard tuning, with one port sealed to extend low-frequency performance, or with all ports sealed to achieve sealed-enclosure behavior with tighter transient response.

The enclosure is constructed from high-density MDF with extensive internal bracing designed to minimize vibrations and resonances even at very high output levels. Three high-flow bass reflex ports optimize internal airflow, while iso-elastomer feet provide mechanical isolation from the floor. A heavy-duty non-resonant ABS front grille protects the driver without introducing unwanted coloration.

Connectivity includes balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, a trigger input, an IR input, and a dedicated USB port for powering the optional SVS SoundPath Wireless Audio Adapter. The rear panel also features an OLED display that provides direct access to the main functions and can be inverted for easier viewing during installation.
