Compact floorstanding loudspeaker that combines an open, dynamic and communicative presentation with extended low-frequency response for the size of its cabinet. The sound retains a good level of detail and a natural midrange, while the bass section offers authority and articulation even at moderate listening levels. The sound image tends to detach itself from the physical position of the loudspeakers, contributing to a wide soundstage and good sound distribution throughout the listening environment.

The design uses Advanced Transmission Line (ATL) technology, a loading system developed by PMC to make more efficient use of the energy generated by the woofer. The driver is positioned close to the end of a long internal transmission line, heavily damped with specifically selected acoustic materials. Higher frequencies radiated from the rear of the woofer are absorbed along the line, while the lower frequencies travel through the transmission line and are released through the terminal opening with the same polarity as the front radiation. This arrangement extends the frequency response without requiring a large cabinet.

The particular loading system keeps the woofer's behaviour under control over a wide frequency range and helps reduce low-frequency distortion. The result is fast, articulate bass reproduction, a transparent midrange and improved retrieval of detail. Another advantage of ATL is the relative consistency of the frequency response as the listening level changes, allowing low frequencies to remain clearly perceptible even during low-level listening.

The cabinet is constructed from precision-machined HDF panels, with thicknesses reaching 40 mm in various sections of the structure. The construction is designed to provide high rigidity and minimise cabinet resonances, creating a stable platform for the drive units. In veneered models, the veneer is applied both internally and externally to contribute to long-term stability, while veneers sourced from sustainable forests are selected and matched by hand.

The crossover also undergoes a process of component selection and quality control. Capacitors are individually tested before use, and for each pair of loudspeakers, components with matching characteristics are selected. The crossover is then assembled by hand and subjected to both instrumental and listening tests before final installation.

The drive units are specifically developed to work with the ATL loading and its associated cabinet, rather than using OEM-derived units. The integration of the drive units, cabinet structure, transmission line and crossover is designed to achieve natural, low-distortion reproduction, with good dynamic capability and an extended soundstage. The design also allows the twenty.23 to be used with a wide range of good-quality amplifiers and in stereo or multichannel configurations, thanks to the consistent tonal balance shared across PMC's range.
