The Larsen Model 9 speakers are the result of the evolution of theories developed by Stig Carlsson, based on a radically different approach from traditional speakers: they are placed close to the rear wall but away from the corners, minimizing early reflections and naturally integrating the room’s contribution with the direct sound. This philosophy effectively eliminates the classic “baffle step” and ensures an extremely uniform energy response even at high frequencies, creating a balanced and cohesive sound throughout the listening environment.

The Model 9 follows the design principles of its predecessor while introducing a completely redesigned cabinet with elegant curved wooden surfaces, higher-quality drivers from Scan-Speak’s Illuminator Series, and a crossover built with top-tier components. The configuration features a woofer positioned near the floor, a diagonally mounted mid-woofer, a forward-firing tweeter, and additional upward-firing tweeters designed to enrich the reverberant field at higher frequencies. This combination delivers wide and controlled dispersion, maintaining consistent energy distribution up to the highest frequencies.

The most striking aspect of listening to these speakers is their ability to “disappear” acoustically, creating an experience that feels very different from a traditional Hi-Fi setup. The absence of early sidewall reflections and the careful handling of the rear reflection make the listening environment less intrusive, producing an effect similar to an acoustically treated room without any dedicated interventions. The result is an extremely natural reproduction where the sound seems to float independently of the speakers themselves.

Despite their relatively compact size, the bass range is deep, controlled, and well-defined. Interaction with room surfaces, particularly between floor and wall, allows for solid and articulate bass reproduction, extending below 40 Hz while maintaining precision and intelligibility even in complex passages. Bass lines remain clear and realistic, and orchestral music is rendered with credibility and definition, free of boom yet full of impact.

The wide dispersion and uniform response contribute to a lively, realistic sound, closer to live experience than many front-firing speakers that narrow their directivity as frequency increases. The reverberant field remains highly consistent with the direct sound, minimizing typical room-source interference and producing a natural, balanced tonal character. The entire listening space is filled evenly, without noticeable imbalances.

Imaging is precise and well-structured, with a wide and deep soundstage that extends beyond the physical position of the speakers. With high-quality recordings, the depth of the scene can be surprising, even positioning instruments virtually behind the room’s front wall. The listening area is also broader than that of many traditional speakers, allowing multiple listeners to enjoy a consistent and engaging sound.

Overall, the Larsen Model 9 represents an original and refined proposal in the Hi-Fi landscape, the result of meticulous research and development. The combination of orthoacoustic design, premium components, and careful craftsmanship achieves a balanced, natural, and immersive sound capable of highlighting every musical genre with realism and coherence.
