New diaphragms with speed comparable to beryllium-based solutions
The NS-5000 tweeter, midrange, and woofer use 100% ZYLON® diaphragms*—a synthetic fiber developed in Japan known for its world-leading strength** and elasticity—and a proprietary Yamaha monel steel coating applied via vapor deposition. The soft dome diaphragm eliminates peaks and dips in frequency response caused by diaphragm resonance, while maintaining very high acoustic speed thanks to ZYLON, whose properties are comparable to beryllium-based solutions. The result is an exceptionally flat frequency response with uniform tone and speed across all frequencies, delivering highly natural and astonishingly faithful sound reproduction.

R.S. (Resonance Suppression) of new design: special ducts eliminate mid and high frequency resonances
The newly developed R.S. units are mounted behind the tweeter and midrange drivers. These special ducts (patent pending) cancel unwanted tube resonances generated behind the diaphragm. Two custom-designed tubes, developed through acoustic analysis, eliminate these resonances. The R.S. ducts enable high-resolution audio reproduction and eliminate the need for sound-absorbing material inside the cabinet, which could otherwise dampen frequency response and affect subtle sonic nuances.

After evaluating numerous cabinet design concepts during the development of the NS-5000, Yamaha selected a bookshelf configuration inheriting the legacy of the NS-1000M (introduced in 1974), a symbol of Yamaha monitor speakers. This bass-reflex cabinet has a 65-liter internal volume—the smallest possible for a 3-way 30 cm (12”) configuration—and is rigidly assembled using a right-angle three-way joint construction along with traditional woodworking techniques. Internal bracing, designed through FEM analysis, eliminates cabinet resonances caused by delayed vibrations of the six panels. In addition, an inverted reflex port prevents airflow turbulence typically generated by bass-reflex systems, improving bass performance and increasing signal-to-noise ratio.

During the development of the NS-5000 cabinet, Yamaha conducted extensive research into the mechanical strength and acoustic properties of various materials, carefully selected and inspected the wood to remove imperfections, and verified long-term durability. As a result, laminated plywood made from Japanese white birch from Hokkaido was chosen. To achieve optimal cabinet rigidity, the front panel is 29.5 mm thick, while the other five panels are 20 mm thick (excluding paint layers).

New acoustic dampers require no sound-absorbing material and contribute to faithful original sound reproduction
The parallelepiped cabinet structure helps equalize internal standing waves at specific frequencies, which are then eliminated by a newly designed resonance tube (patent pending). This technology removes the need for internal damping material. As a result, standing waves are virtually eliminated, achieving remarkable efficiency and extremely precise reproduction of powerful musical impact that would otherwise be lost through acoustic absorption.

Gloss black finish enhances aesthetics and improves signal-to-noise performance
All six external cabinet surfaces feature a gloss black finish using the same paint and polishing techniques used for Yamaha’s renowned grand pianos. The uniform, durable coating further increases overall structural rigidity, eliminating even the slightest vibrations and contributing to a more intense sound and improved signal-to-noise ratio.

Frequency separation circuitry
All NS-5000 drivers are wired in positive phase using single wiring to provide a natural and enjoyable listening experience. The crossover components are mounted on a double-sided printed circuit board with 140 μm copper thickness; the shorter signal path minimizes audio loss during transmission. In addition, to reduce signal degradation, high-end components have been selected, such as the renowned MCap SUPREME EVO audio capacitor made by Germany’s Mundorf, the Mresist SUPREME attenuator, and a woofer coil weighing 1.6 kg.
