The LS5/9 is a high-quality loudspeaker originally designed by BBC Research and Development for professional use in medium-sized recording studios and control rooms. It is engineered to deliver extremely faithful, neutral, and reliable reproduction, maintaining strong tonal coherence and a particularly rich, balanced, and natural midrange that reveals unexpected details even in familiar recordings. It follows the philosophy and character of the higher-end LS5/8 model, bringing the same professional-level rigor into a domestic listening environment.
Thanks to the work of Derek Hughes, the original BBC design has been reinterpreted and recreated to modern quality standards without compromising the historical sonic character that made BBC monitors renowned. At the heart of the speaker is a new 8-inch woofer developed entirely in-house in collaboration with Volt Loudspeakers, built using the highest-quality materials. The mid/bass driver features a robust die-cast aluminum frame, a powerful motor assembly, and a carefully selected polypropylene cone paired with a high-quality rubber suspension, all assembled and hand-tested to ensure uniformity and consistent performance.
High frequencies are handled by a selected version of the 34 mm Audax soft-dome tweeter, protected by a sturdy metal grille, which integrates seamlessly with the woofer through a sophisticated crossover designed to optimize overall response and maintain perfect coherence between the two drivers.
The cabinet uses the classic BBC “thin-wall” construction, made in the UK from 9 mm high-quality birch plywood, chosen for its ability to move resonances away from the critical midrange region. The lightweight yet properly damped panels, combined with internal rockwool damping, contribute to a natural, open, and coloration-free sound. Real wood veneers are applied and hand-finished to high standards, giving the speaker an elegant and discreet appearance, while the front grille, crafted from a single plywood panel and held in place with hidden magnets, preserves the clean aesthetic of the design.
Despite being a compact standmount speaker, the LS5/9 impresses with authoritative bass, precise mid-highs, and the ability to create a wide, stable, and deep soundstage with credible instrument and vocal localization. Its sonic signature is distinguished by exemplary tonal balance, transparent and expressive midrange, refined and never fatiguing highs, and a listening experience that remains enjoyable even for extended periods.
