The LS5/9 is a high-quality loudspeaker designed by BBC Research and Development, featuring a newly developed 8-inch woofer designed and manufactured entirely in-house using the finest materials available at the time. Originally intended for use by the BBC in studios and control rooms, the LS5/9 maintains a close relationship with the larger LS5/8 model. Equally at home in a domestic listening environment, its rich, balanced midrange reveals details that may go unnoticed even in familiar recordings.

Thanks to the work of designer Derek Hughes, the original BBC design has been recreated to meet new standards of excellence. A new mid/bass driver was developed in collaboration with Volt Loudspeakers. It features a die-cast aluminium chassis and a substantial motor assembly. A carefully selected polypropylene cone, combined with a high-quality rubber surround, completes the woofer design. Each mid/bass driver is hand-assembled and tested by Volt.

The tweeter is a selected version of the 34 mm Audax soft dome, protected by a robust metal grille. A sophisticated crossover integrates the two drivers and equalises the overall frequency response to achieve optimum performance.

The cabinet follows the classic BBC thin-wall construction and is manufactured in the UK from high-quality 9 mm birch plywood. The hand-applied veneers are finished to particularly high standards. The panels are assembled to shift resonances away from the critical midrange region, while a layer of rock wool provides the necessary internal damping. The grille is made from a single piece of 9 mm birch plywood and is held in place by magnets concealed behind the front panel.
