The Sony PS-X70 stands as one of the finest examples of Japanese engineering applied to analog hi-fi. This fully automatic direct-drive turntable is the result of meticulous and refined design, both technically and aesthetically. Its appearance combines glossy and matte finishes in a distinctive visual blend that reflects Sony’s signature style, giving the unit an elegant and sophisticated look worthy of its performance.
The BSL (Brushless and Slotless) motor ensures smooth and silent rotation, free of torque irregularities, thanks to the absence of brushes and slots. It features a speed detection system based on Magnedisc technology, derived from Sony’s Magne-Scale precision measurement techniques. A magnetized surface along the inner edge of the platter transmits accurate signals to a multi-gap head, which provides data to the servo circuit. A crystal phase-lock control system (crystal lock) keeps the rotation speed stable, minimizing variations caused by voltage fluctuations, stylus pressure, or internal heat.
Functionally, the PS-X70 allows for independent automation: it can operate the tonearm or the platter separately, in addition to full automatic playback. End-of-record detection is handled by a luminous sensor that applies no lateral pressure on the stylus, thus preserving its integrity. The mechanism also disengages automatically if excessive force is applied, preventing damage. A built-in muting system reduces noise during cueing operations.
The cabinet is made of SBMC, a material that offers excellent structural precision and superior internal damping compared to metal. At the base, four large adjustable feet filled with a high-viscosity gel-like material provide effective vibration isolation and help maintain a perfectly level setup, enhancing overall stability.
Within Sony’s turntable lineup, the PS-X70 holds a special place. It is not only the original model in the series that includes the PS-X60 and PS-X40, but also a technical evolution of the earlier PS-X7. It has earned a reputation as one of the most respected and widely distributed Japanese turntables.
