The Revox B77 MKII is a highly esteemed reel-to-reel tape recorder, considered one of the most iconic masterpieces in 20th-century analog audio production. Manufactured from 1980 to 1998, it was developed as an evolution of the B77 MKI, inheriting the robust build and design philosophy of its predecessor, while introducing significant enhancements that elevate its performance further—making it a benchmark both for home listening and professional studio use.
Visually understated yet functional, the B77 MKII retains the classic Revox design: clean lines, a brushed aluminum front panel, and solid, intuitive mechanical controls. However, its true innovations lie beneath the surface. Compared to the earlier model, the MKII features integrated tone motor control with a Vari-Speed function, allowing for continuous adjustment of playback speed—a valuable asset for musical applications, editing, or simply for users seeking fine pitch control.
The internal electronics, both audio and drive-related, have been completely revised in this version, resulting in greater stability, reliability, and precision during the delicate recording and playback phases. The mechanical construction is executed with near-craftsmanship quality: quiet and durable motors, smooth and precise tape transport, and high-quality heads that ensure a wide, linear frequency response with very low background noise.
Despite being a product conceived in the 1980s, the B77 MKII remains remarkably current. Surprisingly, it can even integrate with modern digital audio systems. It is compatible with the Revox Multiuser System and can be controlled via the Revox app—a strong signal of the company’s commitment to sustainability and the long life of its products, which continue to remain relevant across generations.
The sound of the B77 MKII is warm, full, and dynamic, with exceptional depth and detail. It brings out the nuances of every tape recording with a musical presentation that many enthusiasts consider unmatched.
