The Marantz ST-17 is an AM/FM analogue tuner belonging to the Esotec line of the 1990s, designed as a dedicated radio receiver with particular attention to tuning performance, signal stability and interference reduction. The design adopts a straightforward approach, with a front panel featuring a fluorescent display and controls for station selection and preset memory.
The FM section uses a double-conversion architecture, a solution designed to improve selectivity and reception stability even in the presence of radio signals with different levels of strength. The tuning circuit is designed to facilitate reception of FM broadcasts and maintain good stereo channel separation, while the AM section completes the configuration by supporting the two main analogue radio bands available on the tuner.
The internal architecture features a segmented power supply, with dedicated circuits for the different sections of the tuner in order to limit interference between stages. Marantz also pays particular attention to component selection and circuit layout, using short signal paths to reduce the possibility of interference and maintain signal integrity.
The output stage uses Marantz-developed HDAM devices, a proprietary technology employed in the company’s analogue circuits to provide fast response and keep distortion low. The audio section is therefore designed to preserve the characteristics of the received signal and provide an output suitable for connection to an integrated amplifier or preamplifier.
The chassis is designed to provide effective isolation of the internal circuits from electromagnetic interference and vibration. The component layout and chassis construction help keep the power supply, reception and output stages appropriately separated, following a design approach focused on operational stability.
The front panel incorporates a fluorescent display for showing information about the tuned station, together with the controls required for tuning and preset management. The memory function allows preferred stations to be recalled quickly, making the tuner suitable both for everyday use and for integration into Marantz systems from the same generation.
The Marantz ST-17 is therefore designed to serve as a dedicated FM and AM analogue source within a hi-fi system, combining a double-conversion RF section, a segmented power supply, HDAM circuitry in the output stage and a chassis designed to limit external interference.
