The McIntosh MCD201 is a SACD/CD player designed exclusively for stereo playback. An interesting feature is the 214-step volume control, integrated into the variable output, allowing the device to function as a single-source preamplifier. The player offers two separate outputs (one fixed and one variable), available in both unbalanced (RCA) and balanced (XLR) modes.

Inside, the MCD201 uses a Cirrus Logic CS4398 hybrid multi-bit/DSD DAC with support up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Another notable feature is the servo-controlled digital reading system, which acquires data from CDs at quadruple speed and from SACDs at double the nominal speed, storing it in a buffer to correct any errors. This approach significantly improves reading accuracy.

Among the rear connections, there are dedicated sockets for integration into McIntosh multiroom systems, as well as a well-designed remote control. The front panel includes a rotary volume control, spring-loaded track selection buttons, and a clear display with SACD Text support.

The sound of the MCD201 stands out for its bold dynamics and wide, well-defined stereo imaging. As a CD player, it offers excellent performance, characterized by a rich bass, articulated midrange, and slightly restrained treble, in line with McIntosh's typical "voicing." This balance allows the player to deliver both orchestral complexity and acoustic simplicity with great naturalness and depth.

In SACD playback, the player performs very well, with the difference from CD playback noticeable in terms of resolution and musical transitions, but less pronounced compared to other devices.

In addition to its audio quality, the MCD201 offers the ability to be used as a simple but effective preamplifier, thanks to the integrated volume control. It features high-quality balanced and unbalanced outputs and can be connected directly to power amplifiers for a minimalist listening experience.
