The Marantz CD-80 is a high-quality CD player produced in 1989, a twin of the renowned Philips CD-80. It stands out for its solid and imposing construction, weighing around 15 kilograms, which reflects its robustness and the attention to detail typical of high-end products of that era. Inside, it features the famous Philips TDA1541A digital-to-analog converter in the “S1 Crown” version, paired with the SAA7220 digital filter and the Philips CDM1-MKII transport mechanism — a combination that ensures precise and musical sound reproduction.
Its design is elegant and timeless, characterized by clean lines and side panels that emphasize its sturdy build. On the rear panel, it offers two RCA outputs (one variable) and two SPDIF digital outputs — one coaxial and one optical — the latter switchable via a dedicated control. The transport remains fast and reliable, capable of reading discs smoothly and without audible errors, even in the presence of minor surface imperfections.
Despite its age, the Marantz CD-80 continues to deliver an enjoyable listening experience, with a warm and detailed sound. It is appreciated both as a CD player and as a high-quality digital transport, thanks to its Philips CDM1 mechanism, still regarded as one of the best ever produced. A vintage piece that combines elegance, solid engineering, and high-level performance, embodying the excellence of 1980s audio design.
