The Bel Canto CD-2 is a CD player designed with a straightforward construction and particular attention to the robustness of its disc transport mechanism. It adopts a top-loading configuration, eliminating the conventional front-loading tray and its associated opening and closing mechanism. The disc is loaded by placing the CD directly onto the central spindle and securing it with the supplied magnetic puck.

The transport mechanism is a Philips CD-Pro2LF, a robust mechanical solution also used in professional applications where reliable operation over extended periods is an important requirement. The top-loading configuration also reduces the number of mechanical components involved in the loading system.

The player features a steel chassis treated with damping measures designed to control mechanical vibrations. The upper section incorporates an aluminium element that protects the optical assembly while also contributing to the stabilisation and damping of the chassis. The 12 mm front panel is also made of aluminium and contributes to the overall rigidity of the structure.

The front-panel interface follows a straightforward approach and uses a single control for the main functions. A single press starts playback, pressing during playback activates pause, while a double press during playback stops the disc. Turning the control to the left or right allows the user to skip to the previous or next track. Additional functions can be accessed via the dedicated remote control.

The CD-2 features unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR analogue outputs, together with three digital outputs, allowing the player to be integrated into different audio configurations and connected to external digital-to-analogue converters.

The top-loading configuration also requires a simple precaution during standby: keeping a CD on the platter helps protect the optical pickup from dust. The aluminium top cover completes the structure and protects the disc transport mechanism when the player is not in use.

The Bel Canto CD-2 combines a Philips CD-Pro2LF transport mechanism, a steel and aluminium chassis with damping measures, a straightforward user interface and a comprehensive selection of analogue and digital outputs for integration into a variety of Hi-Fi systems.
