The McIntosh C2600 represents the evolution of the renowned C2300 and C2500 tube preamplifiers, combining the best features of its predecessors with an advanced digital audio section and updated tube circuit design. It is an extremely versatile preamplifier, equipped with 16 inputs that allow virtually any analog or digital music source to be connected. To ensure the purest sound, the analog and digital sections are housed separately in a dual-chassis design to prevent signal interference. Analog inputs include three balanced phono, four unbalanced, one dedicated Moving Magnet, and one Moving Coil, while digital inputs include three optical, two coaxial, one USB, and the proprietary McIntosh MCT connection. The signal is routed to three sets of analog outputs, both balanced and unbalanced, to connect the C2600 to amplifiers.

The C2600 features a DSD DAC with 32-bit / 384 kHz resolution and supports high-resolution DSD and DXD playback. Optical and coaxial inputs decode music up to 24-bit / 192 kHz, while the USB input accepts PCM signals up to 32-bit / 384 kHz and DSD64, DSD128, DSD256, as well as DXD 352.8 kHz and DXD 384 kHz. When paired with the SACD/CD transport MCT500, the proprietary MCT input provides a secure connection for native DSD SACD playback, delivering the purest possible sound quality. Thanks to these features, the C2600 is highly praised for its natural and detailed performance, outperforming many higher-priced preamplifiers.

The preamplifier offers extensive customization: all inputs can be renamed according to user preferences and remain simultaneously available, while the outputs are designed to facilitate bi- or tri-amplification without accidentally muting highs or lows. Tone controls allow adjustment of individual sources, and the Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD®) adds an enhanced spatial dimension for headphone listening. The Home Theatre Pass Through function ensures seamless integration into multichannel home theater systems, making the C2600 ideal for both high-fidelity audio and home entertainment.
