The Audio Note (UK) M2 is a preamplifier specifically designed to deliver superior sonic performance, prioritizing musicality over technical specifications. It meets all Audio Note (UK) Level 2 criteria, featuring pure Class A operation, zero negative feedback, Single Ended circuit topology, valve rectification, and the use of high-quality materials and components. Both the M2 Line and M2 Phono are phase-inverting, engineered to preserve the purity of the incoming signal and maintain the original musicality of the performance.

The Single Ended zero-feedback circuit achieves maximum linearity and eliminates the need for a phase splitter, which would introduce undesirable crossover distortion. Unlike much of the audio industry, the M2 is designed to minimize non-harmonic and time-based anomalies rather than chasing seemingly perfect harmonic or intermodulation distortion measurements that often have little perceptual relevance. This approach ensures maximum linearity and minimal transient distortion without relying on potentially detrimental corrective measures such as inherently error-prone feedback loops.

The M2 Line features a 6SN7 line stage and a valve-rectified power supply with 6X5 and ECL82. The M2 Phono includes a 6SN7 line stage, a Moving Magnet phono stage with ECC83 and 6DJ8, and a valve-rectified power supply with 6X5 and ECL82. The RIAA Phono version uses ECC83 and 6DJ8 for the Moving Magnet stage with the same valve-rectified power supply. The Balanced versions use a pair of 5814a valves for the line stage and a properly designed balanced output circuit with copper/copper output transformers, sharing the same valve-rectified supply with 6X5 and ECL82. Every design detail of the M2 is aimed at delivering natural, coherent, uncompromising reproduction, allowing every musical nuance to emerge with clarity and precision.
