Amplifier designed to increase the available power of low-power integrated amplifiers or valve power amplifiers, allowing less sensitive loudspeakers to be driven without sacrificing the sonic characteristics of the preceding electronics. Its operation amplifies both the voltage and current of the incoming signal, providing up to four times the power of the connected amplifier, up to a maximum of 100 W per channel.

Connection is made via high-level inputs, to which the speaker outputs of the main amplifier are connected. The rear panel features speaker inputs and outputs, with terminals also provided for bi-wiring. The unit is equipped with an IEC socket for the power cable, while the main power switch is located on the side. An LED indicator on the front panel shows the power status.

The design aims to preserve the sonic character of the connected amplifier while increasing its driving capability and dynamic performance. The Unico Upower can therefore be used with low-power valve amplifiers, including single-ended designs, expanding the range of compatible loudspeakers, particularly those requiring more power than the main amplifier can deliver on its own.

In listening, its contribution is most apparent in greater dynamic impact, improved handling of energetic musical passages and a broader, more spacious sound presentation. Performance nevertheless depends on the combination of the upstream amplifier and loudspeakers, as well as on the characteristics of the recordings. Careful consideration of the required power and compatibility between the various components is therefore recommended.

The Unison Research Unico Upower is designed for users who wish to retain their low-power valve amplifier in their system while increasing the loudspeakers’ driving capability through an additional amplification stage.
